North - Reviews

"Ann Michelle Harris delivers an epic heart-pounding adventure with unforgettable characters and a dazzling tale of love and resilience. "

--Sharina Harris, Author of Sign of the Slayer and Soul of the Stone

"Harris’ world-building is detailed yet easy to understand, with enough mystery to keep readers engaged. Cara jumps off the page slightly more than the rest of the cast, but Kai’s perspective is also distinctive and compelling."

--Kirkus Review

"A Solid Addition to the YA Fantasy Genre"

1) How is the theme of family explored in the story? How do the different family relationships (in both the South and the North) reflect or differ from your own experiences.

2) Beck, Dahlia, Wil, Cara, Kai, Ione, Nor, Malcolm all have very distinctive personalities. Which character(s) did you relate to most and why?

3) Class, bigotry, oppression, and freedom are major themes in the novel. In what ways do they play out in the totalitarian North Kingdom versus the enlightened South Kingdom?

4) How is the symbolism of dark and light / black and white expressed in this story compared to others you have read?

5) Discuss the way class differences affect romantic relationships in the story, particularly in a way that is different from friendship or colleague relationships. How does Beck and Dahlia’s relationship compare to that of Kai and Cara or James and Renna.

6) What role does food play in the story overall and for individual characters? What is your favorite food scene in the book? How is food weaponized by Teagan, Nor, Malcolm, and Kai?

7) Wil’s charisma and cheerfulness hide a difficult truth. Discuss the ways external pressures and expectations can affect a person’s path in life.
